Andrea graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Social Work and the University of Michigan with a Master of Social Work. She is originally from Saginaw, MI and has fallen in love with the Ypsilanti community after working for the Family Empowerment Program at Hamilton Crossing. She has experience working with youth placed at risk, who have experienced trauma, and who are transient. She has enjoyed her time spent with youth and families in out-of-school settings such as Girl Scouts, Parkridge community center, and a variety of mentoring programs. Youth have taught her how to be patient, to forgive others, laughter is healing, and that her mistakes do not define her. She is passionate about reading, writing, eating, baking, inspirational quotes, dancing, and singing.
Bright Futures at Holmes Elementary is a safe, family styled, academic based, and trauma informed after school program that serves 2nd-5th grade students. Bright Futures offers homework help, recreational and socio-emotional learning club time, and academic enrichment activities. In Bright Futures, we want student involvement in the program to lead to better engagement during the school day. We teach our students to prioritize homework, for which we provide support daily during “Mind Time”. The heart of what we do is centered around evidence based practices aimed at assisting students enhance their socio-emotional learning skills.
At Holmes, we offer a wide variety of activities and clubs designed to encourage students to try new things and gain experience in a safe and fun environment. Our clubs are focused on building the following skills: Emotion Management, Empathy, Teamwork, Responsibility, Initiative, and Problem Solving. We also encourage the use of embedded academics in fun and engaging activities focusing on STEM, writing, and reading skills. With family engagement as a value, we host regular family nights centered around both student and parent ideas.
Bright Futures at Holmes Elementary runs Monday through Thursday from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm during the school year, with additionally scheduled bonus sessions during the occasional half-day or Friday. Our 6-week summer program runs Monday through Thursday during July.
